I lifted his response to "how do you do a good burnout" on another forum..

EVERYONE HAS THERE OWN WAY? the way I do it is drive around the water box looking for the grove in front of you line up behind the guy leaving in front of you if you witnessed a good quality burn out and he left good if possible. I back my bike up and simply look down at my front tire, when i see the water coming up behind it i know my rear tire has been dipped and well rounded in the water. I at this point pull out maybe 5' or so knowing my rear tire is on dry track and im no where near the water box which will also help get rid of the extra water in the ,tire groves so you dont just splash it up into the fender i pull the r's up squeeze the front break and drop the clutch- not slide but dump it I use 3rd some use 4th or 5th gear i'll rev the bike a little high to build the spin and heat rock a little side to side then dump the front break and ride away about 5' while spinning, pull the clutch back in so i dont stall it, find 1st and i might dry hope it once just to make sure ive got bite. now this is an example of what i do on a street tire. many have different ways they do it but i believe my pre soak process is the best way and my burn out is also the best way. the drive away in a burn out isnt needed but its fun if your comfortable and the dry hop is just piece of mind for me. I see some really bad burnouts still in the water and this is no only wrong but dangerous and will not effectively give consistant results. the goal here is warm up and consistantcy( yeah i know i cant speel ) guys to model after are donnie huffman, bruce croneberger. these guys do the same thing everytime and there 60's are the best in there classes the best and most consistant you'll find. good luck and try and pick 1 mentor dont take a poll i did this my first 2 years and never really got to the top of my game. john

Well, I've seen quite a few burnouts. Some smoke em so much you lose site of the entire bike along with the rider, they'll smoke it completely off. Some just can't quite get the hang of the whole burnout thing, or they think they can do just as good or better than the one before him. I've seen Burdenski do his burnout and yes they are pretty good. But there's one in particular that I'll never forget. Temple 2001

For those of you that missed Gin's memorable burn-out. The bike took off sideways = ran right between her legs - carried them both down the track and ended up with everybody brused up but not seriously hurt.
....I think somewhere about then, I gave Gin the position of "Photographer Boss" where she got to tell anybody taking pictures how to do it and she got the authority to throw someone off the restricted area that didn't listen !!!!

Dang Women - just don't want to talk about IMPORTANT THINGS - Like "The Perfect BURNOUT"!!!

...Myself, Burnouts have been "trial and error" for most (who am I kiddin' ALL) of my own riding caareer, with the "error" part sticking in my memory more than some super smooth smoker I did umpteen years ago.
..The two of those on top of my many dragstrip screw-ups were -
----At Fremont California in 1975 when I got sideways right out of the water and just barely kept it upright, it got so crossed up. THEN whil'st I was congratulating myself for not falling over - the motor started lugging down and it was THEN I realized I'd forgotten to pull in the clutch lever. Blowd both cylinders off the Spook, the chassis blow'd in half just below the neck so bad that they stopped the race cause nobody had seen one quite like that and the inspectors wanted to look at it... Ended up making some rules changes over that one - myself, I ended up with busted ribs and an impression of a shovelhead rockerbox on my chest.
....The 2nd waterbox screwup I did was when me & Blanton went down to NO Problem Raceway Park when it was brand new and I ended up with "a problem".. Green Track - so I was boiling the back tire with the front brake held on a bit too long. John said that both tires were smoking when I went past him. Mabe I hit a patch of something on the track or mabe I just busted my ass?? I can't say - it happened so fast. Broke my left arm on that one right at the end of a steel plate that has been in it for decades.
....But war storys like that don't progress this thread any more than inuendos that got deleted.... HOW bout some of you SMOOTH riders talking some real stuff to the beginners that might not admit to needing advice but would probably read about it and remember?????

Smokey burnouts look cool in pictures and necessary for bikes with wheelie bars & slicks. But on street bikes I like to add only enough as much heat as needed, there is fine line between the perfect launch and standing the bike straight up and busting out the taillights. Many times tall geared street bikes need a little spin to get the RPM up.
I like to start the day with high tire pressure and spin the tire just enough to get it clean 9rocks, dirt, beer tabs) then make some passes, have some fun and adjust the pressure as the track surface changes. But then there is nothing like a long smokey burnout. See ya at Temple!

OK.  I'll bite.

Step 1:  After pulling in to waterbox grab a big handful of front brake.
Step 2:  Gently snap throttle partly open to spin small rear tire. hehehe!
Step 3:  Make sure you have a photographer sitting squarely in front of you!
Step 4:  Make sure photographer runs like hell after you release the front
brake.  (see Pic far left side)

Step 5:  After rolling out of the throttle listen for the chirp. Tire is now warm,
            clean and ready for use.

oh yeah....one last important step.  (last pic) When warming tire, close eyes because nitro burns like hell and make sure you have Chris Streeter and Doug Vancil behind you in the smoke because the rest of the day you are going to be behind them!!     I hate it when that happens.........

To me the perfect burnout is any one that doesn't scare the Hell out of the Staging Boss.  I'm getting older and can't move as fast as I used to.
