Harley: Keeping Pa. Plant Means More Job Cuts

YORK, Pa. (AP) -- Harley-Davidson says more jobs will be lost at its central Pennsylvania plant even if the company decides to keep the plant in the commonwealth.

The company told employees Wednesday that it plans to outsource "noncore" job functions to suppliers, including some subassembly, chrome-plating and stamping of parts. Company spokeswoman Pat Sweeney says the plan would keep vehicle assembly, metal fabrication and painting at the plant.

Sweeney says the company plans to decide in December whether to keep the plant in York County or move it to Shelbyville, Ind., Shelbyville, Ky., or Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Tom Santone, president of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers District 98, says he believes about 400 jobs would be lost under the plan. Sweeney says there are still "too many variables" to determine how many jobs would no longer be needed in York.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Gov. Steve Beshear has expressed doubt that Kentucky will land a Harley-Davidson manufacturing plant.

The governor released a statement Thursday saying the potential for pulling off a deal with the company is "significantly diminished."

The company has been looking at a site in Shelbyville for a motorcycle plant that employs 2,500 people.

The governor has put lawmakers on notice that he might call them into special session in December to consider an incentive package for the company, which also had been looking at keeping the current plant in York, Pa..

Beshear said Kentucky recruiters would continue to court the company until a final decision is made.

The company had also been considering sites near Kansas City, Mo., plant; in Shelbyville, Ind.; and in Murfreesboro, Tenn.Kentucky Governor ‘Doubtful’ On Harley Plant
